Inspired by the beautiful, natural surroundings of the Palm House, join writer Alison Down in a reflective and informal exploration of creative writing. As part of the Birdcage Stage sound installation coming the Palm House this winter, we invite you to come along and share your thoughts, and words in a fun, creative writing session. This is a chance to let your mind wander, spend time in nature and free your inner voice. Have your poem or message recorded by our resident sound artist and hear it playing through a beautiful bird box in December as part of a larger exhibition.

We will be joined by artist Sam Cooper to share her project Mindful Garden as part of our winter Birdcage Exhibition Programme. The workshop is ideal for anyone aged between 3 and 12 a fun way of interacting and learning.

Mindful Garden: Visualising the Unseen helps children learn botany; the branch of science concerning plants, through explorative and interactive plant-based activities. As an art-science multi-disciplinary project, it promotes fun and exciting hands-on learning for children with botany through engagement with scientific processes and artistic visualisation. The aim is to explore plants through the senses and investigate the unseen using microscopes.

This workshop is aimed at age 3- 12

More special performances to be announced during the exhibition in December. This festive season we will be welcoming local artist collective the Birdcage Stage to the Palm House for the first ever winter exhibition. Birdcage is working with the Palm House for the Autumn/Winter Artist in Residence with thanks to the Fanchon Frohlich Estate. We will be making additions to this programme with special events run throughout! Keep an eye on our website and social media for updates. A golden gilded birdcage will house pop-up performances inspired by the changing seasons, winter stories and live music from selected local acts. A beautiful collection of brightly coloured bird houses will come to life with stories and songs from local school children, musicians and spoken word artists.
