Being Human Festival The Nonsense Tree – After School Session

This free after-school session for children aged 7-9 is running as part of The Nonsense Tree activity day. The event is part of the 2023 Being Human Festival and run in collaboration with the Palm House.

The Nonsense Tree’ activity day at Sefton Park Palm House introduces children to the peculiar plants and funny flowers of Liverpool-based poet and artist Edward Lear. Inspired by the 150th anniversary of Lear’s ‘Nonsense Botany’ pictures, we will discover the science and geography of plant names, explore Lear’s poems and life- story, have fun decorating and naming our own fantastical nonsense tree, and plant real trees and bulbs in the grounds. A pop-up exhibition explains Lear’s botanical adventures and regional links.

The after-school session runs from 3.45pm until 5 pm. Children will be led through a series of drama, crafts, and gardening activities, but must be accompanied by an adult. As spaces for the activities are limited, booking is essential (book one place per participating child – there is no need for accompanying adults to book).
